Victor Reinz headgasket starting to fail after only 20k??

History of the car/motor: I bought the car (1984 318 w/ swapped 2.7i) at the end of September with ~ 12k on the rebuild and just cleared the 20k mark. Motor is a B27 block that was pressure tested and magnafluxed, but is otherwise a stock eta bottom end. The 885 head was also pressure tested and resurfaced, so I am having a hard time believing there are problems with the rebuild. I havent had any issues at all with the car, runs like a champ.

The only stupid thing that Ive done is the last time I drove to California, a month ago, I put the oil cap back on halfway. Dont ask me how it happened, it was 4am and I had been on the road for 12 hours already after spending a day at work. The cap sat like that for ~100-150 miles until I reached my destination. The car idled like it was on 5 cylinders and after pulling all the plugs I found one saturated in oil and it was directly below the oil cap. Cleaned everything, put the oil cap back on and was back to normal.

I just drove back from California (850 miles each way) and checked oil and coolant resevoir each time I stopped for gas. I spotted some frothy, foamy crap on the top of the dipstick, but the oil itself looked fine. Resevoir was low so I filled it up. This was repeated on my second stop for fuel. When I added water to the resevoir it didnt look oily at all. This confused me and after being on the road the whole day, I had plenty of time to think about what happened. I would expect that if water was getting into the oil, then the opposite should be happening too, but with no signs of oil in the resevoir or in the coolant at all, I am unsure whats going on....

So, fluke? excessive paranoia? early signs of headgasket failure? Im going to change the oil here soon and am hoping to get a better idea based on what it looks like coming out.

    thoughts?

sounds to me like your oil just foamed up a little. check the oil again when the engine is cold.

I would think leaving the oil cap partially open might introduce air into the oil system that could froth up in the pan, while ever so slightly decreasing your oil pressure..
that being said, if the oil is not at all milky, I think you're good, especially if the oil returned to normal appearance after you tightened the cap.

as far as the missing coolant, I remember having to add a bit of coolant sporadically over a few months after I first bought my car (fresh from PO's rebuild).. he had mentioned they had some trouble bleeding the cooling system after the build, so I thought that may have been remnants of the elusive air bubble that was gradually burping itself..
could be what's happening with yours..

Simple test. Let car sit at least 24hrs, water will settle to the bottom of the pan. Open the drain and see if water comes out before oil does.

I think you may just have had moisture in the oil from leaving the cap open. It's common to see a little milkshake on the bottom of an oil cap and/or at the top of the dipstick. Moisture gathers in the crank case and when the engine is running, water turns to steam and has to go somewhere.

ok, the oil looks worse and worse. can I just buy a new headgasket and other bits to install a new headgasket before this gets worse? I have been looking at building a new bottom end, but I want to fix this before it all pops and gets worse

You should have the head re-surfaced and examined for cracks before putting on a new HG. Otherwise, you will be looking at milk-shake again. And, make sure you buy new OEM head bolts and torque them down properly.

thats the plan, I am still confused why this happened. Best thing I can do now is to make sure it doesnt happen again :/

My guess is that you had a defective HG. Just make sure that the HG sits correctly before torquing the bolts down.

He also carries Elring kits. I've bought about 10 of them over the last couple years.

I forgot to ask, and honestly prior to doing some research about Victor Reinz, I had no idea how bad they were. Ive heard mixed reviews about Elring also. Im going with a Goetze.

My only question is I have Victor Reinz headbolts also, and blunt says they are fine an the OEM headbolts will take a week to get. I dont know if the gasket will survive another week.

Should I be worried about the VR headbolts too???
