VR bolts are fine. In fact, the only issue we have ever had with the VR stuff is the head gasket itself. Zero issues with the Elring gaskets and we have probably done about 10 or 15 m20 head gaskets in the last year or so.

I've had VR bolts fail on me, real bmw ones are only like $.25 more each. very worth it. the VR gasket set is great. the headgasket in that set is completely crap.

you can see the silicon beading difference here. (VR, Erlig, BMW)
the other thing to notice is the quality of the rings in the gaskets and their design.
      Much wow

I wont lie, the Elring also looks damn good. My friend works at Car Tender and the PRO3 cars they build all use Elring. I already ordered the Goetze and I have zero regrets. Im changing the oil today, and I'll be snapping some pics that should look delicious. Ill update this post later tonight with pics

Just to give you a comparison of how bad this shit is, this was the first hint of what was coming. An oil change I did on 12/16/12

              oil change I just did

Head is coming off this Thursday

Anyone know what I could use to clean out the shit from the motor once the fresh headgasket is on there? I heard Lubrimoly has something, also heard something about ATF, but Ive never dealt with this before

Just change the oil again after getting it nice and hot.

                It'll be fine.

VR headgaset on mine has a season on it and is still sealing.

Goetze is or was the OEM supplier of the BMW gasket for E30's if I'm not mistaken.

not really sure what you are getting at. headgaskets either seal or are blown, there is no process of "sealing"

based on this thread and others, I replaced the VR head gasket in the set with the Goetz plus I used this:

                              ^ yes

I used Copper Spray a gasket on both sides of my VR. multiple coats. going strong year 4. and Blue no stretch headbolts.

My VR gasket puked its guts out a couple years ago. Only had about 40k on it. I used copper gasket sealer too.
