    M20 head plastic bit?

    I just got my head back from the machine shop, and I'm desperate to get it on the car today. I checked the back of the head and it's got one plastic piece near the back coolant hose, yet the other side is open. Here's a pic:



    Do I need either one? Or two? Am I missing one? I can't find anything on realoem...

      You are missing a bung, and all four of them are needed. That won't stop you from installing the head, but you can't run the engine until you have the bung.

      Get four of part #13 on http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...66&hg=11&fg=25

      The best head gasket to use is the OE gasket, but a Goetz is a good second choice. Use new copper plated nuts (and anti-sieze) for the exhaust and of course new head bolts. And don't forget to use new o-rings on the top and bottom of the oil return tube. It is pretty important to chase the head bolt threads in block and blow them clean with compressed air. Oh yeah, make sure both dowels are present.

          It's probably also worth it to mention that those are supposed to be replaced every time you change the valve cover as well. Lots of people don't do that and wonder why their valve cover is still leaking :p

              True! I've never understood why the bugs don't come with the valve cover gasket.

                  Thanks everyone. Turns out the VR headgasket kit came with 3 which I never saw, so I'm all good.

                      Note that rocker shaft end plug in the head is in backwards

                              That is the correct installation for the plugs and those are valve guide seals in your hand.

                                  Those green things are valve seals they go under the springs, between the valve guide and shaft of the valve to keep oil from leaking through. You installed the black plugs the correct way.
