    325e Oil Consumption Woes

This is a lame first post, but I suppose a lot of forum members are sucked in this way. (i.e. HELP ME OH GOD!) I love these forums and they've been a great resource! Anyway, hello. This is my problem, which I probably already know the answer to. (Leak-down test?)

My car is an '86 325e automatic at 138,000 on the odometer. I've had the car for 18 months and added 25,000 miles.

    Problem:

After replacing my oil pan gasket to solve a leak (losing about a quart every 3000 miles), I've noticed the oil level still dropping. Underside of car is dry and nothing pooling in the flywheel cover. (Rear main seal seems OK.) I've put about 400 miles on this car since the new pan gasket and i've lost nearly 1/3 quart of oil.

    Things of note:

Idle has always been a low but steady 600rpm. Bounces to 650-700rpm in park/neutral. Performance is about what I'd expect from a Eta with an automatic.

MPG is 29-32 hwy and 22 city.

Exhaust does not smoke. No oil at the tip.

ICV, throttle body, intake boot and rear of MAF all have oil inside them.

I run 20w50 except during the winter.

    Valves adjusted 12,000 miles ago.

I pulled the plugs today and they all look about the same. (Picture below.) In my totally amateur opinion they look borderline OK. They are a little over a year old, Bosch WR9LS.

    Question:

I have not tested the injectors. Is it possible for one or two to leak so badly that it washes the cylinder clean of oil and the lost seal adds pressure to the crankcase? (Sending oil up the breather into the throttle body.) I guess that would not explain the oil in the ICV though, since the inlet from the breather is blocked when the throttle is closed.

Any ideas? Do my plugs look like they are burning that much oil?

this is not that un-common. if the car sat for a year or more. the valve seals may have dried and causing more than normal consumption. 1qt/3k-mi is normal. the miles are low and that usually means it sat un-touched.

You might have nailed it. I know the car sat for a period before I bought it. How easy are the seals to get to? Thanks!

no. you pretty much have to pull off the head to do it.

I wouldn't sweat it too much. My car consumed that much oil for many years. It's not necessarily impending doom.

plugs dont look bad and its not blowing smoke so i'd also not do anything drastic at this stage

+on valve seals. Might want to try some high mileage oil as a bandaid, worked in my case on a 200k+mile eta. Reduced consumption/loss by a measure amount after 2-3 oil changes.

So...I'll keep some (more) oil in the trunk then. Sorry, earth. Thanks everyone!

(losing about a quart every 3000 miles),
That's perfect. It's lubing the valve guides, but not too much.

Assuming you run non- synthetic, don't worry at all.
If you run synthetic, you should go out and have a small party for your car.

a quart every 1k is usually the threshold of concern.

Your #5 plug looks lean to me, and none show signs of oil consumption. If you want to do
something nice for the car, have the injectors professionally cleaned. And buy it new plugs.
