    Whats this knock? (video)

Its only on a cold start, and just for a few seconds ones the motor turns over. It needs another valve adjustment and tick is sort of loud already, is this just increased valve tick? what do you guys think? Thanks

That's rod knock man. My engine did that for a few weeks before I heard that sound anytime the engine was running. It will eventually destroy the engine if you keep driving it. When I tore my motor apart, there was so much empty space between the rod and crank that I could put the piston at tdc, and push it down slightly without the crank turning.

i talked to the service techs at my dealership and they listened to the motor with a bar thing and they said its not coming from the bottom end. more likely poorly adjusted exhaust valves so hopefully it will be better after that

I certainly hope you don't have the same problem I did. But as soon as I watched your video, I instantly thought, "Damn, I've heard THAT before..."

I really hope not. I finally have time to readjust my valves again tmro. If that doesn't fix it im taking it to another shop. What did you end up doing? just buying a new motor? im sure that's cheaper than rebuilding right

Before the rod knock, I failed to replace the timing belt after buying the car, resulting in a broken belt and a ruined head. I found a head, lapped the valves, put new stem seals in, adjusted the valve lash and put it on my existing bottom end. A few thousand miles later, "knock knock." I found a complete, low mileage motor and installed my refreshed head on it and kept the head off the "new" motor for a spare.

Yeah rebuilding is quite expensive. Not worth it in my opinion unless you're trying to shoot for big power.

Well the guy i bought from had the timing belt, water pump, oil pan gasket and a bunch of other stuff replaced a couple thousand miles before i bought it, with receipts to show. Im doing my valve adjustment tmro morning. I will end up just buying a new motor then if i have to though..

Is the oil pressure light on while it is doing it? If so, you might get better startup pressure by replacing the filter with a good OE one. Thicker oil wouldn't hurt either. If a rod is really loose, you should hear it at other times too.

Sounds like the bottom end. Did the shop start it from cold or listen to it after it was warm. Good points raised above^^^
I would check oil pressure ASAP - It does not take much to finish off a rod bearing!!!

Theres no oil pressure light on. I shopped it cold, he heard the start up and he listened cold as well. He said top end.

I just changed the oil maybe 200-400 miles ago. so it has new filter as well. oil isn't low i check it every week.

I also found the fan has been chewing on the plastic frame piece on the radiator, but that sound is obviously more than just two pieces of plastic rubbing...

Im redoing the valves now, a few of the (not sure on the actually term/part) lash adjusters (?) on the exhaust side are looking a little off compared to the others. The tech did say it was on the exhaust side of the top end. ill get some pics

so I finished the adjustment, which was all fine from the first time i did it still, so no change. the knock is still there. The previous owner threw out a couple suggestions as well, possibly one of the of the valves is sticking, or one of the fuel injectors is on its way out. what do you guys think? He also said he had a compression check done when he got the new oil pan gasket and timing belt/water pump and it was fine then...

Im probably just going to take it to a shop at this point though its kind of beyond me. plus i don't have the tools for an oil pressure check.
