Quick test to rule out PS pump.

Take off the v belts, start the car, see if it still does it.

Don't run the car very long- you have no water pump now- but if it's not
quiet, I stand by my initial diagnosis....

Sorry to report back so late. I did the tests as suggested above but noise didn't change. I decided to swap the timing belt, tensioner and water pump. Something I noticed when I removed the timing belt cover was the contact and groove formed from the belt rubbing on the inside. Is this normal? What prevents the belt from moving in and out on the cam and crank ?Click image for larger version

I think would be the most logical source of the noise. On slight acceleration, engine speed increasing.

It was wobbly and I grabbed it to spin and checked for noise. It fell off in my hand.

Got the same noise out of mine.

Head was rebuilt/timing belt, tensioner, water pump, everything was done about 3,000mi ago. At the dealership. Would a tensioner die that fast?
I wash BMWs all day at a dealership. Do you have any idea how much i8's suck to do anything but look at?

When I had my head gasket done it was supposed to be replaced. It only 6k miles when mine fell apart. Looks like the bearings or race seized and sheared itself.
