    Water system

So I did a coolant flush because the coolant inside the expansion tank was disgusting. Then I cleaned out the tank. I put new coolant in and it's dirty as hell again. And there is white residue on the cap. What is my issue? Should I get a new water system? Or how do I clean it?

White stuff on the coolant reservoir cap could indicate a bad head gasket. Check your oil too... if it looks like coffee with cream in it, definitely the head gasket.

Yeah, I think the cleaning procedure here might have to start with Mr. Head Gasket.

But do a few more tests...

Whoever did the flush didn't use distilled water. Take the cap off, wash it, let it dry on a table or something and you'll get the same effect. I doubt you can get rid of it with another flush, don't think its a big deal as long as you car isnt suffering any other issues. Next timing belt clean it well and use distilled water. I don't know anything about chemistry but it looks like calcium or oxidation.

Even if you clean the expansion tank, that's only one small part of the coolant system. You'd have to do multiple cleanings with distilled water to get it fairly clean. Jim Levie suggests cascade detergent or 6oz of oxalic or citric acid if your system is rusty for cleaning it out.

You could probably open the block coolant drain plug and put a garden hose into the expansion tank and leave the hose on for awhile, probably get rid of most of the disgusting crap that way

I haven't specifically done that though, someone else should chime in

I have. Engine runs awfully cold like that. Haha. I haven't tried the detergent method, but hot detergent sounds like it would clean better than just cold running water. It did an ok job though, iirc.

I also have connected an air hose to the bleeder screw location and shot compressed air in there trying to clear a blockage. It definitely worked, but the blockage was now on the ceiling. Lol.
