    2 Head Questions

In the process of replacing a broken rocker arm and leaky (oil only) HG on my stock 1987 325is with ~240k mi.

    Question #1:
My valve stem seals are ancient and hard as a rock (and leaking tons of oil). How do I remove them? They're so hard and brittle my needlenose pliers just break them into pieces:

    Question #2:
I have some light scratches on one of my cam journals and head. I can catch them with my nail, but they don't seem to be that significant. I've seen others with more scratched cams that need them replaced or polished, but I feel like this probably isn't that bad. What do you think?

    Thanks!

So this isn't my fix or pics. This is a trick I found that the M70 (V12) guys use. I made a pair of this pliers and they work great. I also use a wooden dowel to put in the seal to give you a better grip.

At 210k miles, the rockers in my m20 were worn out. I replaced them and the cam as well. I just used a regular set of pliers to remove the seals.

Your lobes are wiping- you're due for a new cam and rockers. So the scoring on the bearings is a moot point...

        Sorry

Thanks for the info. I was thinking of getting a new cam. You think I need all new rockers as well?

Best practice is new rockers when installing a new cam. Kind of like cap and rotor or oil and filter.

its a terrible idea to not replace rockers with a new cam

jeez depending on the value of the rest of your car keep in mind cost of cam rockers seals guides machine shop work for a skim - oh and btw those valves could be out of spec as well - you get the idea - u might be better of finding an old head on craigs list or junk yard maybe cam rockers and valves will still be ok so u just put it on and rock n roll - again not knowing the shape of the rest of the car - im jus sayin u talkin money bro !
