I guess you could get a torque angle tool and if the crank turns X degrees you would take X/2 and assuming the crank spins clockwise when it turns, you would spin the cam clockwise whatever the sum of X/2 is.

If it turns counter clockwise idk what you would do because the cam bolt might loosen itself, might not though so it's definitely worth a shot.

So you would need a protractor to measure the angle from the crank's TDC to wherever it lands. Let's say it's 5 degrees. Then get something like this http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/otc-...FQ6LaQodnRkFWw

You put the socket for the cam bolt on the end of the tool, then connect a breaker bar to the other side. Line it up at 0 and then turn it precisely to whatever X/2 is. You stop turning the breaker bar when you hit X/2 while it's in motion. The breaker bar will probably go back a bit. I learned it this way, but it could be wrong. You should probably do some research about what other's think because something this precise is way more important than 1 or 2 deg off a head bolt or whatever.

Then they should both be in time. Remember that crank spins 2x the cam, and not the other way around!

Good luck dude! Don't let it get you down, stupid stuff happens to all of us.

I have no idea. It's definitely possible to accidently spin the crank but having it systematically move the same amount for no apparent reason every time beats me.

I wish I had something useful to say. I just can't think of anything to say to help you. I followed the Bentley the first time around I didn't have any of your problems. Since I don't have any experience with your issue, I dunno.

This is why a timing belt job is a right of passage

Seriously though, have a friend come over and put a ratchet on the crank to hold it in place while you're putting the belt on.

^ Yeah, maybe another local San Diegan (sp?) can stop by and address your issues.

bumping an old thread here , but my problem with the timing 'jumping' was because i still had my spark plugs installed, I can see why many members missed that as a reason why it would jump timing because it's it can be kind of the unthinkable to really affect tdc alignment. and I don't know if its because i have a 'high compression' build over a stock m20 2.5 ; being the cause of the crank jump. any who. my m20 is up for grabs.
