resurfacing head w/o removing camshaft ? help

    Hey R3v,

This is my first time doing a headgasket job but I've run into a small issue before I bring the head to a machine shop. After taking it off and cleaning the head ect. I noticed that two valves are always sticking out from beneath the deck and rotating the camshaft has no point where no valves stick out (obviously).

My question here is do I have to disassemble the head in order to get it checked for warping/resurfacing? Any way around this? I have a bentley but it does not make it clear if I have to do this. Thanks!

normally people do disassemble the head to resurface. its not that hard to do and allows you to check for wear of other parts etc. if youre going to reuse parts label them as you pull it part so they back in the same position as before

Thank you! I found an article for disassembling it and it says that once the rockers are removed the valves should be closed shut, which would allow me to then machine it flat. Correct?

Yes, you should be able to do it that way. The machine shop can also disassemble it for you as well.

You don't mill a head with the valves installed so go to advance auto and "rent" a C type valve spring compressor or pay your machine shop to do it.

Think about where all those ground bits of aluminum go when milling.

Heh. I had an M10 head once that had the edges knocked off of a couple of valves.
Apparently, the mill was tough enough to mow right over them.
The head, from a parts car, had obviously been running for a while after the process...
