engine oil capacity...dry system after rebuild

Anyone know the oil capacity of an M20B25 after a full rebuild with a new dry oil cooler and lines? I can always put in the usual 4.5 qt then top it off after the first firing, but if anyone knows it would be helpful.

It's 4.5qts with the filter and it's my understanding that the oil cooler has a thermo valve so it's isolated absent a high temp scenario. I'd disconnect the hoses and fill it in case it ever opens

i always throw a full 5L bottle (5.3 quarts) in works a treat never over or under filled yet i ignore the handbook it seems to be wrong.....

Regardless of how much you put in I think filling the oil cooler requires manual filling.

i wonder what temp it opens at, ive seen 200f quoted

For some reason I recall 350f being mentioned. 200 seems low.

I also think you can bypass it without the world ending.

@ 350 it would never open.

I've heard it might cool 5 or 10 degrees which is not much

My A6 has an oil temp gauge and I think it runs around 250 (I don't drive kit much). I also read something about the life expectancy of oil based on its running temp so there's def some science on this.

Surely someone with a stock b25 has an oil temp gauge or better yet, knows what the set point is for the cooler

Crap, there is a number stamped into the thermostat in the filter housing, and I
forget what it says- 110c maybe? It's just a melting- wax jobbie like in the water t- stat.

I recall that the cooler took another pint on top of the 5 qts the engine took, dry.

It also fills pretty early on in the process- there must be an air bleed in it, because
it was 'wet' by the time the water thermostat opened, I recall...

Wonder how faulty my memory's becoming these days?
