nobody here has done any testing so can't truly say the stock airbox is better than a proper CAI such as the one i mentioned earlier which has had very good reviews............also what is meant by "best" hasn't been defined yet.

In my case "best" was induction noise and looks.....

      Performance? - well I don't think I lost any...but I sure as hell didn't gain any :)

I think the bottom line here is that an aftermarket intake will not show any appreciable performance gains (many will reduce performance) and if your engine bay does not look as good as gjuu's, your money is best spent elsewhere.

based on what testing? A simple K&N filter panel will give a few hp dyno proven..........this is despite alot of people claiming otherwise so IMO its not out the question that there is some improvement to be had.

Just looking at the trumpet/horn it seems to be very close to the wall of the airbox making the path of air from the inlet through the filter into to the trumpet somewhat complicated creating alot of turbulence especially at the back of the airbox.

I would have thought that it would be better to have the entry into the trumpet cyclic symmetrical to the filter like a cone filter where the path of any the air molecule is much the same regardless off which part of the filter it enters.

If your worried about hot air make a seal shield...

This is true, but unless you clean your air filter every 3 weeks, the K&N will degrade fast rendering your once seat of the pants horsepower numbers useless.

Best thing I've done was keep the stock box and take that little "trumpet" i guess out of the airbox itself that restricts flow going into the afm.

BMW does make the best cold air intake considering the factory unit only brings in......cold air. Aka whatever air your driving towards really.

the trumpet doesn't restrict any flow at all. Somebody actually dynoed the difference, and it basically made none at all. Just leave it in there.

makes the flow into the AFM straighter i believe

Here is one I found in Vancouver.

I'm not sure if it is any good but maybe it will at least shut up the "BMW makes the best" crowd?
Just remember that their is some truth to that annoying comment.
For example the Honda B16 in stock form will actually make less power with an aftermarket CAI?!
