Driveshaft Balancing

The issue is most places don't have a way to hold our drive shafts in the machine with the three finger and splined joints.

That being said, we might be offering all brand new drive shafts - with serviceable joints - soon.

John's right, 'most' shops don't have the tooling, but some do. Driveline Service of Portland probably still has theirs,
several places in the Souf build them, so can balance, etc.

Decades ago, when I was dicking with this stuff seriously, I called around locally, and while no- one could do it
in Seattle, they knew where to send me for BMW and Mercedes work. In fact, one said, "sure, we can send it
to Portland for you, but it'll take longer and cost you more than if you box the thing. Tell 'em Gene in Seattle says Hi"

That said, I have found that as long as the thing is phased and tight, balance on the original
shafts isn't critical until the shaft hits at LEAST 4500 rpm, which is, depending on your diff, going pretty fast.

x2. I have been mix-matching drive shaft halves since the beginning, just making sure they are in phase, they work fine (our modified race car sees 147mph twice per lap at Daytona).

We found a place locally that can get us all new fabricated shafts. We put one in each of the race cars to test, but unfortunately one car got punted into a wall 2.5hr in a 14hr race a few weeks ago. The other car performed flawlessly. They have serviceable u-joints and match the OE design. Once I put them through the ringer, hopefully we will offer them up for sale - they will be in the $550 range if this goes through.

It sounds like DS of Portland will have you covered. If not, you can check with Beyer Motor Works in Chandler AZ. They are who rebuilds them for Turner Motorsport and others, although I am not sure if they sell directly to end customers. There is also Arizona Driveshaft & Differential, who has a 24ft balancer that can handle multi-piece shafts. I have not worked with them, but they seem to have a good reputation.
