So, I'm driving on one of my favorite roads last night and on the way back my dash lights begin to dim and headlights don't even seem like they're on. A short time later the engine begins to flutter. Heart racing and i'm like wtf? I turn off the lights and the engine comes alive again.
Drive about a quarter mile on this back road until I get to some residential streen lighting and turn them back on. Luckily I'm maybe 6-7 blocks from where I live. Get home, back up to the garage and turn the car off...try to restart it and it won't even turn. So it did't seem mechanical since the engine ran fine. Checked the battery - Couldn't be the battery I put it in last year and the car has a little over 5000 miles since the engine went in. Check fuses, nothing. Check the alternator and find that both the ground and the thin wire have both broken from the back of the alternator.
Had to re-crimp this and solder a little to keep a good connection.

Keep a bit of an eye on it - this happened to my M30, and it ultimately the alternator died. The diodes went in it. Hopefully yours will be ok.
