M54 with smg- just a bad idea, right?

So Jenn really likes the new car (thanks, Kevin!)
but thinks at least one of the fleet needs to be clutch- pedal- free.
    I hate autos. It's a personal problem.
But I kinda owe Jenn a car...

So then I got this really dim flash of inspiration- smg! Manual,
but no slushpump torque converter. AND no clutch pedal!

Then I looked at what smg owners say about their cars...

I think I've already talked myself out of it, but please, laugh at me
    to kill this idea dead.

Because it really would be fun IF smg was any good...

It's technically possible (using MS45). but I don't know of any calibrations for the M54 with SMG or DCT.

The newer DCT cars are much better though. But then you get stuck with an N54 - fun motor, but not exactly the most reliable ever.

Oh- I thought the facelift E46 330ci got the smg option, like the M3.

I should dig further. Then throw this idea in the hole and bury it. But it's... calling... to... me...

nope.. support is there since BMW used MS45 to develop the N54 (which did have DTC) but the M54 never came with anything like that.

Late E46es *were* sold with a really crappy version of SMG.

Nope. Real, actual SMG (sometimes called SSG). Albeit with the same stupid paddles that BMW put on the non-M automatic cars for a while.

Ah- ssg, that's right, that's what they called it. It got seriously panned, though, didn't it...
This might be one of those 'only if a wrecked one shows up for cheap' projects....

I think you could make E46 M3 SMG work. All the commands are there. It would take serious expertise on the DME though - and for a one off, probably not worth it.

I've spent a lot of time on MS45, including what, as far as I know, is the only EWS delete, an RSA encryption delete, and helping crack BMWs private RSA key - but it would still take me hours and hours to set it up properly - and you still might not like it.

So yeah - technically feasible, but probably not worth the effort.

Ah- my bad, I posted in the engine swap forum, but didn't specify-
my ill- fated plan at the moment is to transplant engine and transmission together,
so an M54 with all E46 electronics.

I'll come whimpering to you when (IF, I mean!) I get far enough into it that it looks good
                    but still doesn't work!

                    Thanks,

Thats pretty cool about MS45 possibly being able to run the M3 SMG. I know the SSG and SMG are physically different but I wonder if the coding/software is the same?

We did get the SMG down here as an option on the late e46 330i. Was the same unit as the M3 SMG. Not sure whether it was a BMW Australia thing - we've had a few limited editions over the years that were dealer fitted cars (most notably the John Player Special e21s and e30s that were black with gold wheels... how 80's :D )

I believe that the 330i SSG uses the same Zf 6 speed found on the regular 330i.

I doubt that Australia got a different setup than the rest of the world. Same basic concept, but there was zero interchange.
