One reason I love the M30 so much is every last one I have cracked open, from 130k to 230k has still had the original cross-hatching marks in the bores and have been perfectly in spec. The iron is so goddamn hard it doesn't seem to wear unless it's really abused!

This might not be 100% correct - but this is what I know.
The Bosch Motronic ECU "brain" that is in e30's was used in other cars as well. It has the ability to do knock sensing(that I know for a fact)- but BMW never used it. Why I don't know - I'd only guess that they didn't need to with low compression ratios.
