Okay, bringing this up because it's becoming more possible by the minute. I've got a solid line on engine mounts and a chip. I'm heavily leaning toward using a B34 (cheaper, more common, lower compression = potential for later turbo goodness), but need to clarify some points because RealOEM does not seem to have a e28 section :(

    Questions:

    1) Do M30B34 engines found in e28 535i cars use Motronic 1.0 or 1.1/1.3?

    2) Will I be able to use my manual eta harness for a B34 if it's Motronic 1.0? (I don't see why not, I know some stuff will need to be extended)

    3) Is the ECU used in E28 535i cars # 0 261 200 059?

    4) Both MarkD and Jim Conforti make chips for the B34, which one comes more recommended? I know the e30 community has a collective hardon for MarkD, but I have not heard much comparison between their M30 offerings.

    5) I have a UUC SSK attached to my getrag 260 right now, is there any reason I wouldn't be able to keep using it with the M30 with a proper selector rod and shift carrier?

    6) Are the available lightweight flywheels recommended, or should I stick with stock?

    Many thanks, guys.

Oh, another one that slipped my mind:

M30B33 cam in a B34 - good idea or bad? I heard (from a guy on the internets) that it "really wakes up a B34". How true is that?

Better to go with the B35 cam according to the charts I have seen. You can get a new one for around $200.

Does that mean what I think it means? Has your e30 moved on?

Thanks, btw. This makes it much easier for me - once I get that moped working I can just putt putt putt up there when I need to.

i was gonna use the B33 cam... i actually have one sitting in the garage ready to go in... then i found out the b35 cam is better and i have one on its way in a B34 head since my head gasket went...

so i'll let you know in a week how much the b35 cam wakes it up!

also i am using my short shifter from the M20 and i used linkage from an 87 535is and it put the shifter in a great spot with a G260 and funks mounts. Neutral is dead center :)

as far as the chip i have a Dinan and its great.

and i heard the 8lbs fly wheel from the M5 is nice, i wish i would have done something but i was trying to keep some kind of a reasonable budget... the m30 does rev rather slow as is...

I am planning on having it out in the next two weeks or so.

does the 533 flywheel bolt up directly to the b35 motor without any other parts?

                    1) Yes the M30B34 found in the 85-88 E28 535i & 85-87 E24 635csi uses Motronic 1.0A, the same as used in your ETA.

                    2) You will be able to use your ETA harness, but you will have to lengthen a few wires since some things on the M30 are in different places. I can't remember off the top of my head, but I think its a few injector wires, AFM, & CTS. Just go over the Online ETM and figure out the colors. It should be pretty straightforward, but just be obsessive about labeling connectors, it'll make things easier.

                    3) Yes.

                    4) Everyone I know with an E28 recommends the MarkD Chip.

                    5) Yes, the UUC should fit fine. Your ETA currently has the Aluminum shift console instead of the earlier sheetmetal one, correct?

                    6) The Flywheel used is the M5/Early 533i is considered lightweight and weighs 17.5lbs. The later ones in the 535i weigh 22lbs.

                    HTH.

IIRC, my e34 M5 flywheel weighed 13.5lbs on my bathroom scale. It revs pretty fast, but I have nothing to compare it to stock-wise.

Realoem does have an e28 section, btw. You need to click on archive to access it.

The only 8 pound flywheel is the JBR aluminum one.

www.mye28.com is by far the best source of info I've found for the M30. Lots of the questions above are answered there.

If the 533 flywheel is the same as the M5 one (which I think it is), nothing needs to be done.

Allright, so electronics is not an issue anymore, then. Further questions:

Does the e34 A/C compressor mount in about the same location as an e30 one? (do I have a chance in hell of keeping A/C?)

Do small-case and medium-case diffs have the same input flange? (can I attach an M10 driveshaft to a medium-case diff?)

What are M30 guys doing for strut bars? (my Sparco doesn't seem like it would fit an M30 under it)

Who wants an eta motor and a getrag 260? :D

I can only answer your diff question, and that's a yes. I changed my small 318i open diff for a medium case s3.73 and it bolted right up.

The A/C compressor is about in the same position, but I believe you'll need to get custom lines made, i plan on having A/C in my car with b35. I don't have a good picture of that

Also, there were more than one style/type of g260 trannys.
