Late model m42 or some kind of = m42/44 hybrid. What do i have?

I recently picked up replacement m42 for my car. It came out of 1995 318ti automatic car.

It is an interesting one. It has m44 style oil pan and timing case and m44 style oil filter housing with plastic cap. It also has blank boss for the rear crank position sensor.
Timing case has extra bolt hole around the oil pickup point.

I need to check the oil pump and see if it has a bigger one like the m44s do.

Everything else looks like standard m42.

is the current one e30 based? asking as the e36 version uses different mounts and doesn't bolt in direct to the e30 chassis.
not sure how it flies in an e21.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was swapped out at some point or it was a late production 95 and got the newer engine.

The current motor is from e30. Mounts are custom.

1996 and up got m44 which is totally different. I don't think it was swapped. It doesn't look like timing case was swapped either because it has proper crank position sensor mount. Later m44 timing cases don't have the CPS mount.

To summarize it has m42 head, m42 crank, m42 cps, hybrid/transition looking timing case, engine block with rear cps boss just like the m44, m44 oil pan and m44 oil filter housing with plastic cap.

At first i thought someone swapped m44 timing case and oil pan and made custom cps bracket but timing case is one piece casting including the cps mount so obviously its not m44.
Then i thought maybe someone dropped m42 guts in the m44 block and bolted m42 head but the crank position senor boss is not machined.

Either way i can make that motor work i was just curious if anybody seen anything like that before.
