feel like something is missing...power *UPDATE GET SEAFOAM*

Ok, so I wasn't expecting this to be as rev happy as my old civic (b16), but with all the claims of the power once in the rev range, I'm not incredibly satisfied that I'm making all the power I should be with my m42. Since purchase I've done a COP kit, mess under the intake, new plugs, new air filter, and had a muffler welded in (stupid cheap muffler sounds like crap).

Things I think are problems and will be fixing:
    1. timing chain tensioner - awful racket from front of motor, dissipates once engine temp climbs high enough. (possibly too heavy of oil?, possible stuck lifter?)
    2. Cracked/leaking exhaust manifold - I can hear an exhaust leak somewhere but have not pinpointed it, but it sounds as though its in the region of the header at the collector?

What else? Perhaps my cat is old and crapped up? I've tried driving for a while to burn it out, but who knows....

It just feels like it's not breathing as well as it should for the RPM that I'm pulling (also guessing at RPM due to tach failure, but it works sometimes lol)

I'll be pulling the A/C as soon as possible, but have never actually used it so it shouldnt be too much parasitic loss there..

    Other suggestions?

M42s are pretty slow. turbo is about the only realistic answer. :)

I understand, but I guess I drove my civic more post swap than before, but sheesh, seemed quicker than this! Not to mention this thing is GUTTED!

most likely the civic WAS faster. I mean, a stock 318is is already light for an E30, but a civic is still lighter, and let's face it, the B16 is a much better motor in almost every respect.

the M42 is a good little motor for what it is - do some maintenance to it (new seals/hoses/plugs/etc), a chip, fix any vac leaks, make sure all the sensors are reading correctly, basically get it running like it's supposed to. It will still be slow, but it's also enjoyable to drive despite that.

light wieght fly wheel. The m42 has the heaviest one out of all the bmw's.

How many miles do have on the thing? Mine still pulls strong. Went up against a hatch si the other day. Ran with him tell 3rd, and his car was gutted. Mine still has every thing in it a/c and all.

Cant wait to do my stroker.

I'm trying to do all the maintenance items I can while keeping budget respectable. I dont plan to keep the m42 forever, but until I get everything else up to par the swap will be worthless.

If the AC works don't pull it. There isn't parasitic drag when it's not on.

going to manual steering will kill a small amount of parasitic loss, but I don't know how much that will help. Fix the tach; that will probably help just from the standpoint that you know where in the powerband the engine is. And get a chip. I recommend Mark Dsylva chips, from Dsylva-tech.ca. I had the 93-octane version in my car before the Megasquirt, and it helped quite a bit.

I'm pulling the A/C working or not because it's also added weight and the goal is a track/weekend toy. I have an e90 for my daily ride.

Maybe I'm just expecting too much from too little. Perhaps I should just bump my plans for a swap up earlier than I'd originally expected.

                            Swap.

When I get my mess back together, you'll have to take my M42 for a spin. :hitler:

Replace part #m42 with part number #m52 or greater.
