no.

the air is inside the pump, that is the problem. if you put vasoline in the pickup tube it's just going to clog it.

Good idea. now to rig something to shoot oil.

When I'm building an engine at home I use a power steering fluid hand pump that I found at an auto parts store. It's the same one I use to replace my trans. and diff. fluid actually.

whatever you do dont use vaseline. use engine assembly lube.

We just had this problem and solved it by priming the pump. There is an additional fitting on the side of the oil filter housing that faces the front of the engine. That leads directly to the pump. We use it for fitting a pressure gauge sender. Remove this fitting (allen head I believe), use a hose and funnel to pour some oil down there, turn the crank by hand (it should take some oil).

How are the bolts on the top oil pan? If they are loos the pan will shift letting air get sucked in.

Ok, just tried to pump oil in that little hole but got nothing. I tried cranking it with the hole just to see if any would shoot out and it did but still nothing. I turn the crank over and over by hand while pumping and plug the hole up then bam. nothing.
