if you do tackle this hose cleanup/delete I would suggest for the hose that runs from the ICV to the intake boot that you put a piece of hard plastic connector in the middle of the hose to prevent it from collapsing, you can find the straight connectors in the HELP! parts in any auto store.1991 318is --- currently not road worthy

Ray - I just did the mess under the intake and had a small leak there. I drained the block too in order to clear what I think was an improperly bled engine - as I think I had a huge air pocket in there. I had the same symptoms that you did after switching radiators and changing the clutch fan.
How I fixed this: When I finally went to fill the radiator after installing all the coolant stuff I preloaded the upper radiator hose to the thermostat. Then I filled the coolant expansion tank to the COLD mark with the bleed screw out. I let it sit overnight and it fell three lines below that mark as it forced the air out of the block and finally leveled out. I then filled it back to the COLD mark. I put the heater on full and turned the fan to full as well so when I started the car it sucked the coolant pretty good out of the expansion tank. I put about a full litre into it while the car was rnnning.... when the thermostat opened at temp I revved the engine and got a pretty steady stream of coolant from the bleed screw, so I topped her off and buttoned her up. Car stays rock steady now at one tick below half on the temp gauge.

No problem. It might not be the "best way" but it worked for me ... You may find all the hoses need to be replaced and then your choices are OEM, parts store, or silicone. I used a combination of silicone and OEM. www.hiperformancestore.com is where I got my silicone kit for the M42.
Buttchug and a number of others are resident experts IMO ... you should ask their input as well.Parts Collector and Former Houndstooth interior junkie.

Randy ... wise move on the elbow those things leak. Mine was broken inside the block. You may find because of the different bends that the OEM work best. If you do order OEM, you should look up www.blunttech.com as a source. Quick shipping and good customer service.
