I think someone has been overexposed to brain damaging chemical fumes. Go ahead and spend your $600 junior ;)

Mine has 203k miles on it, and this morning when it was 22 deg F outside, I started my car and heard a loud ticka-ticka-ticka noise for about 3 seconds. Once everything warmed up a little it quieted down, but I'll be looking at timing stuff this weekend!

well as of yesterday, I HAD 166k on it. But the chain, tensioner and the long rail were all done about 30k ago when I did the head. Havent torn it apart yet, but I know it got ugly, something sure went I was headed home from wahsington an it got noisy. Oil levels were good. just out of corvallis it all broke loose. sounds like the chain is hitting the case

so whats cheaper, converting to single row chain, or all the stock double stuff, and who is it with the single stuff ??

unfortunately its gonna have to wait till after x-mas as I am "between" jobs
but it will give me time to do research

or maybe I can sell my spare m42 engine and tranny thats sitting in a parts car ( it has already had the timing stuff removed for a previous project)

These cam gears came out of a 115k mile '95 318ti M42, before they went to Metric Mechanic. The chain, machining, and shipping cost ~$240
Stock chain is cheaper. MM told me they've seen a lot of stretched/failed double rows... I think it was the old tensioner design that actually did the most damage to the system though. Willing to bet you lost oil pressure, can't wait to see pics of the carnage. Sorry about your luck.

                        Yes.

There's a guy who makes and sells a single row chain for ~$80, do a search on M42club and you'll find him, he doesn't do the machining that MM offers. I was buying some other parts from MM so I just got it all from them for my own convenience.

looks are def the most important part of mech engineering, lol
Do any of you realize that the NVM50, runs a single-row chain strait from BMW?

I think single row chain is a good idea if you are doing a timing overhall.... but what is the real advantage since it costs more?
