I got an open 4.10 in mine and it doesn't kill your mileage on the highway unless you're doing 90. If I do cruise at 80 I still get 30MPG's and my revs are at 3500-3600. That's on flat road though not hills. My city is mostly highway.

        Really want a 4.10 LSD

I'll be going S3.73 when I get it and install. I do a lot of town driving, but the highway seems like my next move soon so better gas.

I had a 4.10 and I cant imagine anyone wanting less. Maybe if fuel mileage is your only concern!

I switched to a G250 trans and am using a 3.73 diff, which is equivalent to a 4.27 with a G240. I think thats perfect for a fun car.

I'd trade my 4.1 lsd for a 3.73 any day.
M42 just gets too noisy after 4k and that's barely over 130km/h.

I just wanted to comment that Im currently running a g260 on my m42 with a med. 3.73 lsd. It's pretty nice, mpgs aren't so bad, not so revvy on the highway, its good for cruising but also quick when I step on it.

Wow so the stock open diff in the 91 318i is a 4.10? No wonder highway cruising sucks....

4.27 came in the auto cabrio only... quite possibly only in '91. So read the tag before

It's a great track gear with an OD 5- speed.
And sometimes shows up on ePay for reasonable $$$...

My old 92' 5 speed Cabrio that came with a factory 4.27 lsd says otherwise.

There were no auto m42 verts. At least not in the states
