    M42 crankshaft bearing install

I am working on replacing the crank baring on my used m42 before I drop it into the car so that it will take care of the thrust baring issue. I have everything apart, crank is out and everything. Is there anything I need to check about the crank or block before putting it in? Other than looking it over for obvious wear?

    Thanks!

are you going with the 360 degree thrust bearing?

oh yeah, I am planning on doing that as well. What should the clearances be for the main bearings as well as the rod bearings?

i dont mean to be rude but im a little bit scared for you... These questions... You should not be taking an engine apart if you have to ask them. You should know all this and then some before you start building something. I hope you manage to get it right, however I have a feeling this might end in disaster...

I appreciate the comments, since you are being nice about it. I realize it probably would be a lot better to know more about it before tackling the job, although I have worked on Lots of engines before, just never done crank work on a car.

Get yourself the Chilton's guide for the car. It covers the M42 and engine rebuild specs, such as bearing clearances. At least I think it does (I am away for work, can't check).

I used the Chilton for mine and it has the specs you need.

Dan I'd recommend taking the block and crank to a machine shop to get checked... You could be putting a lot of work into a bad engine. How many miles on the block and crank? Was it driven hard?

Do you know about how much that would cost? It has about 90,000 miles on it. As far as how hard it was driven I am not sure. I bought the engine used to replace my blown one.

Get the engineblock and crank to an engineshop / enginerestorer /rebuilder.
May the block needs to be bored and and new honed. You cant tell by just looking at it. Needs to be measured with tools and then you can tell whats going on. It doesnt take alot of money dont worry, but if its necessary, and you rebuild it without, it would be really plain stupid.

You can use plastigauge to measure your bearing clearances. The gener rule is .001" per 1" of journal diameter.

You can find videos of using plastigauge to measure clearances on youtube. Also if you have any questions you can always ask me.

I have an engine rebuild thread on M42club with quite a few pics.

Its not hard to build an engine, the trick is taking your time and measuring everything. M42s are cheap so you arent out a lot if things go bad :)
