Mobil 1 15W-50 full synthetic high mileage formula. Regardless of noisy lifters or anything, I run this because it is one of few oils out there with high phosphorus and zinc levels (ZDDP as a lot of people call it). This is CRITICAL to the longevity of our directly actuated lifters (flat tappets). Oils used to all have more ZDDP in them, and the vavetrain was designed in that era. There was an EPA mandated change in 2008 that changed that, but this oil still has a lot of it. RedLine does too, I believe.
Check for yourself. You can't get higher zinc and phosphorus unless you run their 0-weight race oils, which they don't recommend for street applications, and neither do I.
Metric Mechanic also recommends M1 15W-50 full synthetic for their Rally 2.1L M42. Jim over there ran an oil life study on some bearings and found that M1 15W-50 was the best performer. Exotic stuff like Amsoil and Royal Purple was laughably bad if I recall correctly from our conversation. Hell, just about everything was lousy compared to M1 15W-50.
EDIT:
I was just on the phone with Metric Mechanic today, and they updated their oil recommendation for their built M42's. While M1 15W-50 is still good, Jim told me that the best protection you can get is with Castrol 10W-60 full synthetic. It's what the BMW dealer recommends for basically all 2000-2011 M cars. A stock M42 probably doesn't need anything beyond M1 15W-50 though. I am going to run 10W-60 in my MM 2.1L M42 since I have high lift cams and lighter 33mm lifters (vs 35mm) where the nose pressure is considerably higher than stock. Fuck me, it is expensive though.

Would that explain why my lifters are rather noisy, especially in the morning when cold?
I use 0-40 Mobil 1 (European formula) only because the PO said he only used this weight rating as well.
Not sure if i got this correct, but shouldn't the fact that the weight is less the parts should be "more" lubed when cold?
I should also add that the motor has 207K miles at this moment.
