Depends on where the noise is coming from? Lifters, chain? Sure you installed the chain tensioner correctly?

the tensioner will only fit in the tube one way i believe, it sounds like a noisy cavilier engine. I was told about the lifters bleeding out on another site as well but how long does this take? I had the motor running for a total of maybe five mins i would think everything should be good by then? I'm nervous as hell to run it too long lol

When I pulled the head and freshened it, the lifters probably took 15 minutes to fully shut up.

          Sure you have oil pressure?

r3v member Vivek had a HELL of a time getting oil pressure to build in his rebuilt M42. Although I had not heard of the issue until his escapades, apparently the oil pump needs to be primed, or packed with heavy grease before reassembly (fills in all the little air gaps which allows it to build suction to pull oil up from the pan).

Did you have the timing case off and take the oil pump gears out?

DO NOT start or run the engine until you can confirm that oil is circulating. You haven't given much of a description of the noise, so it's really hard for anyone on here to help you. A video would help. Here's a few questions off the top of my head that will help everyone help you.

Did you install your timing chain tensioner uncompressed?
Was your oil pressure light on?
Is the noise coming from the head (like lifters/valves) or more from the front of the engine?
Is your timing set 100% correctly?
                Are all plugs firing?

Wish you the best, this engine can be a fickle bitch, trust me

no the tensioner was uncompressed, i took the valve cover off and pulled the fuel pump relay and rolled it over as i did it seemed as tho the oil was moving around as it should, as for the oil light im not sure what on this dash works properly as there arte a few things the PO has painted over. The only description i can give of the noise is an old chev cavilier with a noisey engine. Othern then the noise the motor is running smooth i drove it round the yard a bit just to see.

BMWman no i did not, the whole front assembly including the oil pump only had 400 kms on it when i rebuilt the motor i didn't think there was need to touch it

Crap. So are your valves bent up from kissing pistons? The M42 is reasonably tolerant of that...I put the timing chain assembly back together with the cams off by 2 teeth back in 2006 or so and drove the thing for like 10 minutes thinking that the noise was dry lifters. Once I fixed the timing, it ran fine and had full compression, despite the noise I was hearing being from valves and pistons hitting!

I too have cranked my car and tapped valves with pistons, still working fine, but I shut it down right away. Don't assume you need to replace the whole top end just yet.

Sorry for the late update,I got lucky and just marred the cams and didnt hurt anything else.I recently purchased a 318ti donor car and have stripped the cams lifter trays and lifters from the car. Currently awaiting delivery of heat bolts and intake gaskets for reassembly . Also from the same place as i got the Ti i swipped a 74 2002, may be a m42 swap in its near future, as a side note i purchased both vehicles for $400 Can
