    m42 burning coolant

hey guys. just noticed my 318is has been consuming alot of coolant and noticed it mixed in with my oil and im getting the milky oil. right away i thought it was a head gasket until i noticed a decent amount of coolant in my driveway. i looked closer at the motor and the whole bottom is covered in oil and coolant. right around the crank and above it. now the car runs great. is it possible my head gasket is ok and the coolant/oil mixture is from a bad profile gasket in the front timing chain cover? im not to familiar with the m42 engine design. thanks for the help

The front profile gasket is not exposed to coolant, only the internal one, and it is the most likely source of the coolant in your oil. Common external leak points which could cause coolant to run down to where the crank is are the thermostat housing and the coolant pipe on the side of the engine, though if you have an oil leak on the front and coolant in your oil you would have both running out of the leaking seal.

hmm. would it be worth changing the internal profile gasket wile in the car or should i buy this m42 i found with 96k on it and just swap that in? obviously ill change all necessary seals and do a leak down test wile its out of the car.
