    M42 LTW flywheel options?

So im looking to upgrade replace my clutch and figured a LTW flywheel was a good idea for my 318is. I know I can mod m20 single mass flywheels but they still are double digit heavy. Does anyone have experience with either of these brands? I emailed Racehead and asked for user testomys and dyno tests etc. they told me to search the forums and ask around.

    Thanks

I just installed an RHD on my M42 car. See my build thread for installation and discussion on performance! I am also local if you have any questions.

      Thanks,
I'm jelious of your build, I'm definitely following that. If I understand correctly you had a heavier clutch than stock? How many seconds would you say the flywheel took of your 0-60 time?

0.08 seconds, if you flat shift.

I'm a fan of light flywheels, too,
but they don't make you faster.
        Just more fun.

Both that you listed are highly respected.

RHD stuff is baller. I have one to use with my N52 swap - it's stupid light, but very well designed.

Did you have to modify the slave cylinder shaft on the M42 to use the RHD flywheel? They also require the use of the M20 clutch/pressure plate, does that include the clutch release bearing as well or it uses the stock m42 bearing?

I'll likely be using the OEM m40 non-AC flywheel. But I need to find a beefier clutch that'll fit it. I'm worried about chatter, and I've been told the m40 flywheel doesn't.

how much did you lighten it? I took about 5lbs off mine, it doesn't chatter, but I have the typical Getrag rattle.

this should not have anything to do with the fly. what clutch and pressure plate did you use? did it come from eBay?

I'm thinking possibly un-sprung "stage 3" clutch (or whatever Ebay is selling these days) - no offence to "exhaust"; it's just that I've gotten older and things hurt more now, so I tend to be cranky and tell it how it is.. :p

I have a ~15lb flywheel in the E30 now - and every once in 9 months I find the time to drive it (sad I know), but I don't find it any more difficult to drive than my E90 330i, which is pretty much bone stock. At ~7lbs, I would worry more about crank harmonics than clutch noise, but I plan to buy a better harmonic damper to deal with that.

I'm running an m20 flywheel lightened to 9.6lbs with new m20 clutch disc and pressure plate and it works great. No chatter, no getrag rattle. Just a little more gas in first gear starts to prevent stalling but it totally wakes up the engine. I think this is the cheapest/best option, you just need an m20 starter/tob and bolts to get it to work.

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

RHD is defintely the way to go. The only things to keep in mind is that you need a 325i clutch kit, but you still need the 318 pilot bearing (PN: 11211720310). Also, since the height of the dual mass flywheel is higher you also need the auto flex plate bolts (PN: 11227805885). I installed everything a month ago I'll have a video up for the process in about a month or so.
