    Is my LSD still salvageable

So i came across a killer deal on a 4.10 lsd with 130k on it. I put it in today and forgot to check the oil. I went for a test drive and it seized up on me. i got towed home and found that there was NO oil in it. My question is, is it salvageable or did I ruin a good lsd?

how do you get a part like that and not clean it all up, check seals, check fluid, etc?

out of curiousity, how far did you get? just so we know how studly the E30 rear diffs are when run without fluid. :p

I cleaned it up checked the seals and everything looked good but I forgot to put fluid in it before the test drive.. duh!!, Wow i feel like an idiot.

So i took the diff apart and it turns out that it's the input shaft that seized up, everything else looks undamaged. how hard would it be to change out the bearings, or can i put the LSD core in my open diff case.

BTW i went about four blocks and then did about 3 or 4 doughnuts and drove another two blocks before it locked up on me.

if it isnt, a 373 ls is a better choice

you can put the lsd in the open case. thats what i did. if it does end up being FUBAR, i have a s3.73 for sale.

I thought of doing that but the transmission covers look different (number 4). it has 6 bolts on the LSD case and only 4 on the open diff. does that matter or did you just swap the LSD core and the output flanges?

Hey thanks for the unput. I ended up putting my original back in because the cases are different sizes but i was wondering if anyone may be interested in the LSD unit? I'm sure that it could be droped into another case of the same size.

i bought my 318, and the next day checked the oil in the diff and it was empty. almost sure it hasnt had oil in it in at least 4-6 months. if not a year or more

I wounder if the clutch rings are good anymore... I would think that running the unit under stress like that with no oil would burn them making them unservicable.

IMO that diff is a boat anchor now :-(

Out of curiosity is there any signs of harsh wear on the crown/pinion?
