I have almost exactly the same problem but not quite as bad, it seems to be a misfire to me. Only happens when the car is cold for like a mile or two. It doesn't bog with no load on the engine but does when under load.

My theory is bad grounding for the ignition coils.

I may have missed it but when cold does your car rev freely in neutral?

Are you going to replacing the harness? or did you not get to the CPS yet? I would rule that out, I can see no way how that can be causing the problem.

this problem has been solved, it has to do with a sensor for the catalytic converter, in Europe they don't have one so this once sensor is not plugged in, in the US we have cats so the sensor needs to be unplugged

Please see my thread on M42 club

And here is a picture to help you locate the plug.
Please excuse my MS Paint drawing, it was quick, and I did it a long time ago.

Read the thread, he has said multiple times that he has done this and this isn't the problem.

I watched the videos, and if I still had my 318 I would plug the sensor back in and take a video.

That is exactly what mine did, down to the rpm range, the time frame and how it sounded...the thread over on m42, other people it didn't work for, but the vast majority it was a fix.

                    good luck to you.

It's just a case by case basis, I bet i might work on someone else's but I have located and unplugged it, unfortunatley not the solution.

i had the exact issues you describe and it ended up being the ground on the ign coil. someone had swapped for msd ignition and some shoddy wiring.

Interesting, ground being bad or, what?

I have to ask: what is that AFM adapter lead/extension for?

My car has one - and I want to remove it - especially if it has no purpose.

Hmmm.. I guess I'll just see what happens when I remove it then..

Bugs me to not know its purpose or function.

                                (sorry for thread interrupt)
