For those who want to refresh their factory LSD.

So I decided to tear my 3.73LSD apart while my car is in the garage for winter.

I work with a guy who builds Porsche race cars and while I was pulling apart the LSD carrier, he started to recognize some of the parts. It turns out that the LSD unit shares almost all its internal parts with the one Porsche uses, which is made by ZF. And all of those parts are still available.

    Here's all the part numbers:

"Disc with external splines" is available in different thicknesses to adjust preload. The stock discs in my diff were 2.0 mm thick and I replaced them with 2.1 mm discs and new friction discs.

I won't be able to test it out for a few months, but I'm expecting at least like-new performance- hopefully slightly more agressive lock-up due to the increased carrier preload.

Right. You can't buy any internal LSD parts from BMW aside from the bearings and seals.

So. what parts should we buy to rebuild a diff? I'm assuming the internal gears are fine. The clutch disks obviously need to be redone. Anything to fuck with ramp angle?

                  Status: HG repair. 488wtq though!

                    Great!

There's a pretty good writeup on how to replace the parts here:

You'll need 2 clutch discs, part 951 332 551 00 , and if you want, 2 friction plates, which is number 9( http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...-91/305-05.php) and available in 3 different sizes to adjust the carrier preload.

Look on the 2nd picture in the PDF. Those V-notches are the ramps. They would have to be machined to change the angle.

I know. but is there an easy way to change the ramp angle without a machine shop?

Bimmer world has the clutches for cheaper.

So the thicker dog ear splines increase lockup?

Bimmerworlds are $75 each, the Porsche ones are $54 each.
