    Shifter too far forward?

With my shift boot installed I can't shift into reverse, it hits the shift boot frame far before the engagement point. All other gears seem to be okay, and I can get into it with no shift boot installed.

Are my motor mounts trashed? Every thread I've been reading has people shredding shift boot, but I can't even get into gear. Is this a mount issue or something different?

    Thanks.
    Thanks,

Carrier is good, so does that only leave mounts?

I don't see anything wrong with the mounts so I want to be 100% before I just go replacing them.
      Thanks,

Might you have installed the shift lever 180 out?
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

It's a straight lever, so sadly that's not it.

Is there a way to check motor/trans mounts? Visually they look fine, no cracks or anything.
          Thanks,

What about shift bushings? If they are worn and sloppy, it can cause this.

They should all be brand new according to the person I bought the swap from, everything feels tight and there's little play so I believe that much.

Should have bent the lever for e30 use. Throw should be very short with that lever though. Check the front carrier mount bushings.

I would agree with this as well, exactly what I did the first time without thinking about it.

Did not know that, any details on the bend? If that's normal for that shift rod to be bent then that's most likely all of my problems right there.

Oh, probably should have clarified that... The transmission was swapped in, it used to be an auto.

e30 shifters are not straight. they have a slight angle backwards. so do the shifters from z3's that we use to get a nice short shifter.

id say you have the wrong shifter in

I was wrong about what shifter I have, apparently it isn't the z4m just the z4... it's the shortest z4 shifter in this thread (z4 2.5).

According to that thread it doesn't need to be bent but that could be wrong.

                            EDIT: Forgot link...

id say it does need to be bent. other wise you run out of of room.

the only other thing that could be giving you an issue is the the shifter mount off the back of the trans to the body where the shifter lever mounts to it under the hole in the floor.

if the car was converter and that part isnt an e30 one, and its too short. then that will place your shifter too far forward and create issues with getting into gears.
