auto reving to 60km/h in first

    hey
got a 1990 318i auto and lately its been sluggish in changing gears.
it sometimes revs to either 50 or 60km/h in first

just wondering if anyone knows whats going on .. and what to do about it

e30 trannies don't shift at a certain speed, it shifts when certain criteria is met, like, how open the valve body is when compared to how far your foot is down on the gas pedal.

If anything, there may be something wrong with your valve body, or you may need to adjust the tension on the cable between the throttle body and the automatic transmission.

First order of duty for any automatic is always to change the fluid and the filter on the tranny, then take it from there.

Filter is on the bottom of the valve body, you have to take the pan off.

You may also have a throttle valve cable problem.

Best solution for an auto is a 5-spd.

            Keep it slideways!!

yeh mate .. am thinkin of going manual

wouldnt mind doing an engine change down the track .. M50 hopefully

does anyone suggest a specific manual transmission taht will work with the m42 atm but maybe later with the m50?

doesn't exist. I would try to get your auto working for now until you can do an M50 swap later.. M42 auto? eeww... :P

                    hey guys
got the car serviced the other day
got a new tranny filter and oil and also put some oil in that revitalises the seals

however it doesnt seem to have worked .. im guessing that means ill need a new gearbox if i want the problem to stop

mechanic said the rod in the auto was loose aswell that explains why the car wouldnt start sometimes

was talking to my mechanic and he said that its not worth going to a manual just stay with the auto .. i can get a recon auto for $1600 (aussie dollars) so might have to look at that

do you guys thinks its farked or any other options i can possibly look at

Sounds like for that you can get all the five speed parts and labor. Idk how much Aussie dollars are though compared to us..
