    no clutch shifts?

ok i have a friend who does it constantly after he gets going. i can do it to in the E30 but i wanna know if its bad for anything that im not thinking of. (he also has a 2005 focus so things may be diffrent)

He swears it isnt and is accually better because you dont have to engadge the clutch all the time which keeps it lasting longer (makes sence)

anyway if your onclears what im talking about its when you let off the gas at a certain RPM (my iS its about 3,500) and then you can smoothly slide out of one gear and into the next. it doesnt grind or anything but it just doesnt feel right at the same time.

oh yea this if obviously only in standerd slow/normal speed street driving nothing performace about it.

anyone have any opinions on this? or accually know if it is bad or good. im currently not doing it just in case.

Uh, i wouldn't do it. It can't be good for it... Clutches are used for a reason, and can last a long time.

I'd certainly rather my tranny last longer and my clutch last shorter than vice versa.

It's harmless if you can do it well.

If you suck and just keep grinding the gears, then obviously your fucking up.

The clutch in my dads truck sucks and I do it all the time, I used to do it alot in my car, but now its mostly when people don't believe you don't need the clutch and I have to show them.

P.S. the master cylinder in my dads truck broke once while in town. Turning it off, then putting it in gear, starting the truck and driving home with no clutch is a lot better than coughing up $100 for a tow home :P

808 is right [wtf kinda name is that?]

As long as you dont grind em youll be fine! I can do it in my e30, but ive ruined on tranny so far, not as a result of not using the clutch. I had an old 8v GTI that only needed the clutch when getting into first, downshifting wad no issue either!

Just about any car can do it, in a window of about 100 rpm's for each gear. I used to do it often until I heard its bad for the syncros

I used to do it alot, till i broke a couple of shift levers!!! its lots a fun at 6300rpm, and slamming into the next. the best is, i used to never let off the gas pedal either.
i know its a bit different than what your talking about. I think its a terrible idea. my brother when i was younger used to downshift into 2nd with his automatic ford--to save on brakes, till the trans fell apart, and it cost him 2000 dollars to replace the trans, vs. 50 dollars for some brake pads.

                    That would be powershifting.
And downshifting in an automatic is bad, it's not designed to take that kind of stress. IMO it's alright with a 5 speed. Theres a lot of hills around here and its killer on your brakes if you drive an auto.

I take mine out of gear frequently without the clutch, I can "match" the rpms so the shifter comes out very smoothy as if I was using the clutch.

Truckers only use the clutch for takeoff from a dead stop.

I don't know about putting it in gear without the clutch but I always take it out without pressing the clutch.
