    splitting a getrag 260

So I am in the process of splitting a getrag 260 and so far I got it to split about a 1/4 inch and now there seems to be something causing it to stick

so far I removed all of the rear bolts that hold the case together, I have taken out the reverse switch, the reverse gear shaft retaining bolt and the selector shaft pin

is there anything im missing or should I just keep cranking away at it
do I have to remove the drive flange
any good diys about splitting a getrag

    thanks in advance

Yes, you need to remove the output flange to split the rear section. A lot of the bearings inside of the box are held with circlips and/ or are pressed into the housing or onto the main and secondry shaft.

Judging by your post, you do not sound confident in the work you are doing. Whats wrong with the box? Have you considered purchasing another 2nd hand box?

edit, is this box out of your iX?

Here's a link to all of the parts within your box.

nope not confident at all haha but the transmission is stuck in reverse and it sounds pretty easy to split the transmission and screw part 25 back into part 1

I already bought and installed a second transmission so this one is either going to the scrap yard or I am fixing it(not going through all the shipping BS just to sell a 100$ broken trans)

but thanks for the help...in the Bentley removing the output flange is talked about after splitting the case is mentioned so I thought it was only necessary if i were trying to remove the gears off of the back half of the case

and you would be surprised what I can accomplish with a few stupid questions on r3v and the a Bentley(and google)

Yeah the output flange must be removed from the main shaft to split the rear housing off complete.

I think the counter shaft bearing might be retained in the rear housing with a circlip or similar. Once the selectors are out of the way it might stay in the housing.

your saying this is all necessary just to remove the front housing correct?
boy do the transmission diagrams give me a headache but when it shows the front housing it doesn't really show anything attached and I assumed it just pulled off with the input shaft bearing

o and I got the circle clip in the bell housing

Yes, the transmission is assembled from the back. Unless your transmission has more than two piece housing? Is the bellhousing removeable?

doughnut I think we are talking about different things
yes I understand the transmissions is assembled from the back that is why I thought it was weird you said I had to undo the output flange that is located at the rear most portion of the transmission in order to take off the front half of the case
now I have no clue what your thinking and its a normal getrag 260 so it is just a two piece housing

ill post picutes later today not sure they can help

                      I finally got the pictures
so this Is where I am stuck

And I have been using a three jaw puller to remove the front half by pressing on the input shaft

And your saying I need to remove this 30mm nut to get any further

Yeah, pull the rear flange. See what happens... it's been too long since I opened
up a 260, but the 240/245s open that way...

you dont pull the rear flange to split the case ,everything stays attached to the rear half of the case when split , you have to pull the front case off the input shaft bearing to split the case . the reason it stopped at about 1/2 " is the 4th gear on the layshaft is hitting the 4th gear syncro hub on the input shaft ,and that shaft wont come out of the front case section because its held in by input shaft bearing (press fit ,and snap ring) you need special tools #23 1 460 and 33 1 301 to pull the front case off the bearing/input shaft ,it basically a screw press with adapter that bolts to same place as clutch release sleeve with a long tube that goes over length of input shaft ,screw pushes on end of input shaft and pushes it and bearing rearward out of front case half

you'll have to remove the input bearing from the input shaft(press needed with bearing splitter) to re-assemble case halves and then press the bearing back into the case/onto input shaft with heat and yet more special tools once case halves are back together, and not damage the case or input shaft/syncro hub(can't just drive it on with a hammer as it will compress the syncro hub)

i have the Factory manual if you want to look at it
