^Yea. I'm with you on that. It would nice to know what is the minimum you'd need to do as far as getting some nice displacement with out that vanos stuff.

stuff I don't understand scares me- ;) Well, it scares my pocket book, I could say.

they look at everything related to air/fuel and exhaust up to and including the cat, needs to be exactly the same as on the donor car/engine.

It's very expensive to bore these engines as they're coated with alusil / nikasil. So the only sensible option is to use crank with longer stroke, for example from S62 (fits with small modifications), though the gained displacement increase is not very large.

I'd say the best option is to stick with stock engine with proper remap (300hp / 400Nm from the engine) and be happy with that. If you want to go faster, invest to S62 or supercharger :)

Yeah, I am pretty sure stock config will be enough.

and availability. Most of the M60 motors had the nikasil cylinder coating which could be problematic.

The early M62s were non-vanos as well.

^ True but the early M62 are non vanos and Alusil and I'm looking into the conversion, it doesn't seem to be that scary if you have an M60 on hand.
the only thing that's a bit hard work is the cam position sensor, other than that, pretty straight forward

Yes, we know 96+ are Alusil only and up to 99 are non vanos... BUT, the main issue is converting them to OBD1 is not as simple as one would think.

most nikasil cars were covered under a recall anything that has over 60k and is running most likely has been replace by and AL motor, the m62tu motors are terrifying due to the guide rail issue (my e38 is having the guide problem) but the early 4.4 motors are great and less problematic, my roommate put one in his e34 and its ridiculously awesome! he has an obd1 car with an obd2 motor he also even merged the EWS systems together

what's the hard part with the conversion? Unless I missed something, it's pretty much all swapping parts from the M60 onto the M62?

                              ^ e34 or e38.... not sure yet.

                              picked up a 94 540i parts car with a complete 132k m60 for $100 today.

                              missing headlight/tailight/crap interior/no tranny/no cats/muffler but otherwise complete.

will remove the engine/brake system and sell the rest.
