    My m60b40 build

    And with my M3

The 530i I bought as a donor, it's had the 4.0L conversion for those playing at home. The tear down begins.

We ended up getting the entire front clip off, so tomorrow il start disconnecting the ancillaries and il pull the engine hoping to have the engine in the e30 and running by march.

Well lads I've been slack but only with the updates. Been chipping away at the swap though.

Finally got the m42 out (hired help)

Cleaning the m60s a bitch but I'm getting there.

    So is wiring

My engine mounts came today, there from gargatistic I recommend them highly in terms of build quality a cost effectiveness.

We do not just sell parts for your super cars; we are car people too with our own super cars in our garage. This means when we are not working, just like you, we are wrenching away. So here is a little section dedicating help to people with their conversions and also to help the overall car community. If there is somet

    Lick of paint

Now I've hit somewhat of a hurdle, the gearbox (5 speed M out of a 530i is almost near impossible to find) so I've come up with ingenious plan of cutting and welding the auto bell housing to my manual getrag like so.

        Oh lol!

Take the intake manifold off, replace all the gaskets at the very least, also valve cover gaskets. These are a MUST.

Those mounts look great with a little paint! Good to see more and more v8 swaps happening! Let us know if we can help!

Yeah i am using my g240, do you reckon it will? I have seen alot of volvo guys do this when they do m60 swaps. Its more of a experiment i guess i can just buy another stronger box later. Is there a recommended box i could
do the bell housing weld to, strength wise?

Thanks for the advice, thats the plan. And clean and paint the engine. Do you reckon its worth opening up the engine and doing headgaskets?

Getrag transmissions were named by their torque capacity. Getrag 240 = 240 lbs/ft torque capacity. An m60 is about 300 lbs/ft at the crank...

Having someone weld the bellhousing to another trans is the easy part. What clutch/flywheel setup would you run? The clutch disc has to be matched to the trans splines, as well as to the pressure plate and flywheel diameter/depth. The flywheel has to be matched to the engine. Not only do you have to find a combo that actually fits together properly, but it also has to hold 300 lbs/ft...

e36 m3 clutch disc is the same dia. as a 530,,,so he could use a m60b30 flywheel with m3 clutch/pressure plate for cheap! I bought a m60b30 flywheel & used clutch from car-part for $50, slammed a new disc in and bam. (using zf 5spd)

Yeah, sounds like it would all bolt up. Doesn't change the fact that his transmission will have probably a couple hundred bucks worth of labor into welding the V8 bellhousing on, and will likely grenade the first time he goes full throttle...

Yeah I dunno I payed $300 shipped for my zf trans. Couldn't justify paying $200 for anything that I know is going to try to shoot shrapnel into my legs.

If I was a good tig welder with a 12 pack and a warm garage on the other hand, I'd try this on a 260. a 240 tho? hmmm

prepare for your welding work to be for naught!

If you are going to go as far as to weld up a bellhousing to a transmission, why not use a GM transmission like a T56 6-speed or a 4-speed? (i forget the name)

I am not familiar with availability of any of that stuff in Australia, but I am sure there are many RWD manual transmissions out there meant for V8s.

If nothing else, find a G260 or G265, or a ZF from an E36 M3.
