    e30 M60B40 5-speed!!

After breaking the M20 with only 3k miles on the rebuild (shattered the #1 piston rod!!!!) and debating all the options I have decided to go big or go home!! Picked up a M60B40 out of a 1995 740iL with 160kish miles! I've gathered just about everything I need for my swap with the exception of the transmission (waiting on one from snow bound MN!!!), radiator and fans and new core support. The core support was beat up and looked like it had been welded in by a 2-year old!!! Seriously, a blind man could have made better welds! I will be making the new core support removable for easier maintenance. I will be deleting the ABS and booster and going to a complete manual brake system. So far so good as I've gotten the engine and trans out of the car and the M60 broken down on the engine stand. I'll try to update as much as I can and as I make progress!!! Can't wait to get this on the road!!

I got the heads off the motor earlier this week and found some scratches in a couple of the cylinders so I will be doing some honing!! Ordered the compound a couple of days ago and should have it in a day or two. Hoping I can clean up the cylinders without having to pull the pistons but if not, we'll re-ring the pistons and replace the bearings while I'm in there. This was the main reason I didn't relish pulling the heads but there was some pretty heavy oil residue around the area where the intake, heads and block all meet so here we are. I'll get some pics and document the work as I get more time. Also got my new core support ordered and hopefully will have that here within a week or so and I can get it all mocked up for making it removable!

Good luck honing those cylinders. What compound are you using?
also, proper hone or go home. It's pretty much a must to remove cylinders before honing.

You can get liners for these engines.

I was under the impression you couldn't hone Those cylinder walls

you can, you need to do an acid etch first though.

You may be talking about boring though, which is a bit tight, as there isn't much room between cylinders.

You can't re-hone them like you would normally with an m10/m20/m30/m50 etc...

right, using the acid etch is what makes it a different sort of job.

I will be using AN-30 Silicon compound to clean up the cylinders. I had looked at getting sleeves for the block but that is just out of my budget! I've been doing a lot of research/reading and have a good friend that has done a lot of this work so that is a blessing. "Hone" with a green Scotch brite coated pads and then final coating with the AN-30 and felt hone pads. We'll see how it goes!! I'll be well documenting this part especially.

Well I finally got a chance to do a little work on my block tonight. Only had about 30 minutes between other tasks!!! Here is what the cylinders looked like before doing anything to them:

                      After:

This was just the first step. I used a regular triple stone hone with very fine steel wool wrapped around the stones and a red scotch-brite pad wrapped around that. Ran this combination in my 1/2 inch hand drill with just a little bit of WD-40. I will do the other 4 cylinders hopefully sometime this week. I will clean all the cylinder walls and then use the AN-30 Silicon compound to finish them up! For that I will be using felt wrapped around the same honing stones. So far so good!! Now I just need to get the rest of my engine parts to include new rings! I have gotten some of work done on the car itself as well. Got the core support out and the new one arrived so now it is time to work on that as well. Dash is out and getting rid of every extra wire that is not needed aka ABS!!! I also spent some time sorting our the wires under the hood and split the harness in two to route the wires down both sides of the engine bay to make the removable core support easier to deal with. No wire harness running across the front to hang up on!! Hopefully either this weekend or next I want to get the Garagistic pedal mount installed with my pedals and master cylinders!!! I'll post more as I show more progress!!!

Looks good. does that compound you're using bring silicon to the surface? I'd be worried about a good seal or the rings digging into the aluminum.

Interesting stuff! I don't know anything about this type of work, but I'm anxious to see how it works out for you. Sounds like it's not that big of a deal to clean up these cylinder walls after all. Maybe I'll give it a shot if I ever get around to doing a 4.4 bottom end.

Any additional info, tips, etc... you have would be appreciated!

I will find the info I have on the AN-30 compound and let you know. There is a lot of information out there for rebuilding Alusil engines but mostly dealing with Porsche engines. Pretty much the same block material and there have been a couple of guys that have done what I am doing. I will update as I do more.

artoo93, do a compression/leak down after it's put together, very curious how it ends up working.

JGood - with 4.4 you probably won't even have to touch the bottom end, other than rod bearings.
