Yeah, that's typical. My buddy just pulled the pan on his 530i yesterday. 3 bolts and 1 nut in the pan. Only 4 of the 10 bolts were tight.

It's kinda funny actually, how EVERY m60 on the road has loose pump bolts. Just millimeters from destruction...

I'll keep that in mind if I ever acquire an M60 powered vehicle.

Have they "seen" the bent rod or is this an edjumcated guess?

Few things to answer here- I'm a friend of the current owner.

First 91 octane gas has been the norm during his ownership. The fan clutch seized and no more than two days later the fan blew itself to pieces. Rad was replaced and efan retrofitted.

Asfor the shop... They were 'busy' when the car was brought in and the sales guy was pretty stoked to know it was a 540i6. No contact was made for about 8-9 days and when we called they said they hadn't got around to it and to call back in another few days. So we called them and their diagnosis was that something in the bottom end, the rods, were messed up and he needed to buy a new engine. When we went to pick up the car we talked with the guy who said they tried to drive it and when it started it sounded horrible in the bottom end and how as it heated up it was losing compression. (First time he mentioned anything about low compression).. I asked if he haddone a compression or a leakdown test and he said the mechanic told him its so far gone theres no point in doing any testing. I kind of felt like he was just begging us to say go ahead and do the work, but that was out of the question. So we towed it home and started it up the next day and it definitely sounded off, there was something going on, either lifters ticking or the chain tensioner guide, I don't know what but it was clacking...

We found three bolts in the oil pan, one mounting the oil pump to the. Block (the one on the side where it tensions the chain) and two from the pump itself, meant to sandwich the pieces together.

Haven't got a chance to put it all back together yet but does that sound like the problem? Or do you think it's just going to continue ticking like a time bomb?

Also, to mount the oil pump to the block there are two studs with nuts and one bolt, is the the norm?

I've seen two styles of mounting the oil pumps on the m6x engines, what you described is one of them. The second style is instead of the bolt, there would be a stud that goes through the pump, and there would be a nut on the pump side.

Here you can see how it's mounted...the adjustable side is to put correct tension on the chain. Consider yourself lucky that the oil pump shaft didn't shear off , that would make a big mess.

second style here - this is on m62b44 block

                    m62tu was the same way
