Manual E30? Check your pedal box for cracks

This issue is well documented for e28 but I don not recall finding it here. It's pretty much the same assembly as on e30 and shares the same design issue, my pedal box was not an exception.
From what it looks like, clutch muster/overcenter spring tension apply a lot of twisting force on the thin walled pedal box and it just cracks.
Here is what my pedal box looks like (first pic shows the crack). The is a forum member on e28 (David Papin) that offers reinforcement brackets.https://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?t=103670
IE also sells those but they shipping costs are outrageous and they don't have and option to get a tab on the bracket that further resists twisting force of the clutch pedal.
This crack can be easily welded (good luck finding the replacement that is crack free) and reinforced while it's being welded . It's not too simple to remove that pedal box thought. So if the removal is not an option for you, this bracket will do the trick. I did both since my e30 is under the complete restoration.

IE reinforcement seems nifty, but maybe a preventive fix. Possible weld on after repair.

I'm in the Midwest and shipping gets to me quick, Seems like average value for cost to time in transit.

for my project, I tossed that cracked pedal box and I used the automatic pedal box that had no cracks as it has never seen any clutch pedal in its life. The bracket in my picture came from e28 member who manuf. those (link above) I did it just as you said, a preventive measure. I liked that his design has that little leverage tab which spreads some pedal force over the larger area of the pedal box.
