I started doing a valve adjustment on my 159,000+ mi 1990 325is. I’ve been going down my list of things to fix a high idle, so far I’ve cleaned the new ICV, AFM, and intake areas. Now I am onto adjusting the valves. I started in firing order on the intake side and made sure the camshaft was at top dead center for every rocker arm. I finished the intake side and was able to loosen the bolt for adjustment of the eccentric just fine and adjusted all 6 valves to 0.10mm until I felt just a slight drag. I tried to loosen the bolts for the eccentric on the exhaust side but every one of them are on so tight that my wrench slips off and doesn’t turn it at all. I wonder if a previous owner or shop tightened them too much and now they are seized because two of them have a dent/wear on the bolts? So just wondering what the best course of action to getting those bolts off would be thanks :)

When you get the nuts loose considder adjusting the valves tighter.
Using 3 guages (throw the rest away) a 9mm, a 10mm, and an 11mm.,adjust the rocker so the 11 will not go, so the 10 is as tight as possible to still slip in, and so the 9 feels loose.
Use the Bentley method of engine positioning - f.o..+2 - ie Home in overlap than adjust Special
Double check your work.

That line should read:
Use the Bentley method of engine positioning - f.o..+2 - ie Number 1 in overlap than adjust Number 6
Double check your work.

If they are that tight odds are the thread on the nuts are damaged. It's a fine thread so when you remove it have a magnet underneath as the threads form a nice little slinky that you do not want in your oil pan.Seat Shocks....I have passed the baton to John Christy from Ninestitch. Firstly the feeler gauge is supposed to be 0.25mm or 0.010"
Yes those are toast (only m6 fine) they only need to be nipped up so budget on bolts as well IMO. See if a 3/8" ring spanner (good quality one) will fit. If its that chewed up you might need to resort to a needle nose type vicegrip.Last edited by digger; 07-20-2023, 06:10 PM.89 E30 325is Lachs Silber - currently M20B31, M20B33 in the works, stroked to the hilt...
