Which line is the return and which is the output on my early model in-tank pump?

I've been searching everywhere for a diagram or indication of which of these lines is the return and which is the output.



I figured the larger hose was the output, but I saw a video that said that was the return. Which is it?

Large one is the outlet and the smaller one is the return.

Thank you. I got zero psi on that fitting when I did a pressure test, so I guess I have a faulty pump.

early dual pump in-tank pump can be replaced cheap with a chevy vega jobber pump. if you are in the states it's a stupid cheap proposition from a local parts store.

could also use this as a prompt to update to the later single pump system. the cheap in-tank pump for that is a 90's 6cyl mustang pump. i've done this and it works great, even with some mild mods. avoids the trw / walbro costs everyone defaults to for the mod.

yes. just the electric driven pump itself. still needs to be modded to the bmw in-tank hanger. it's a well covered mod and easy to do, just be careful around fuel.

something to note ;
some guys cut the foot off the hanger and bend the remaining rod to support the pump. this will move the pump a bit higher and fuel gauge level will be a touch optimistic. when i have done the mod i usually keep the foot on the hanger and dremel it out if i need more clearance. this puts the pump at the stock level, but is a bit more finicky to accomplish.
