    Adjusting timing?

How do I adjust the timing, or at least, check the timing in my 1989 325i? Is the timing electronically controlled? Did I just waste money on a timing gun? Someone fill me in here, I couldn't find anything in the search.

It's not adjustable, the dme does it for you.
You can check it though, i believe.

should be on the vibration damper in the front,

how does the dme figure out cam position? I don't know if it reads crank position or has a speicific cam sensor. you could 'adjust' that sensor. aftermarket software is probably pretty max'd out timing wise, so it would be pointless - no pun intended.

There is a toothed wheel on the crank it reads, and then reads when the #6 plug fires so that gives the ECU the info it needs.

the toothed wheel is the harmonic balancer, it unbolts with either 8 or 6 bolts takes a little force to get it off, and sensing the #6 wire isnt required for the engine to run

That sensor is definitely required for the engine to run. That is the only way that the ecu has any information on the rotational location of the engine. All it will do is crank. Found out the hard way...

If you have a 318i [like your info shows] then you do not have a timing belt, you have a chain.

He said the car will run without the impulse sensor on the #6 plug wire, which is 100% true.

Obviously the car will not run without the crank sensor.
