How to change timing chain tensioner?

Forgive me, but I'm an M20 guy. Seems to me it's an easy job, and doesn't take long. Can anyone explain what it is, where it is, and what's involved in swapping it? Searching didn't help.

Also, the car has a rough idle, but revs beautifully. What could be causing this? I was thinking it's the tensioner, and at higher RPM the slack in the chain is removed, causing the engine to sound better. Just a theory from what I understand of the M42.

the rough idle is likely a vacuum leak. check the intake boot for holes/cracks and check all vacuum hoses.

It sounds real rough though, almost like it needs a valve adjustment or is low on oil. but i seem to remember that you can't adjust the valves on these...

But i would not put the tensioner in and run the engine to 3k for 20sec. Release the tensioner in a clamp and put it in by hand with a 17mm spanner.

All depends on how fast you want people to reply to your post. There are so many sub-forums on here that posting in them gives you very little exposure so you end up waitng days instead of hours for replies.

I did the 3k for 20 seconds. No adverse affects, but you're going to get a very scary sound if you do it that why when trying to start it. The car will be fine though.
