When you turn key "on", how long before relays click?

On my car it takes roughly 6 seconds. If I try to crank the car before I hear them click, it won't fire. Normal?

Mine are faster than that. Do you know if they are the original 20+ year old relays?

They should be immediate. They don't have any time relay in them.

            Fixed

So threw in a brand new DME relay in today, problem solved. Guess my old relay was on it's way out. Some times it wouldn't "click" period, others it took me cycling the key off and on a few times, while others it took a good few seconds to work.

Just incase anyone else has these symptoms.

I'd reccomend to everyone with an E30 to replace any relays that are original.

are they generic radio shack relays? or should they be sourced from somewhere like blunt, bma, pelican, etc?

I know the DME relay is diode protected, and the Fuel pump relay used to be 4 pin and i think was superseded by the 5-pin. I got them from BMA, but anywhere you mentioned should carry them.

First, there is no diode in the main relay. It is a STDP relay, using 2 N.O. contacts. Some forglight relays will work, simply find one that has 2 "87" terminals and no "87a".

Second, the other relays are all different configurations than any other "off the shelf" relay, so you cannot use a normal relay. But Blunttech, BMA, whatever should have them, but zero chance at Radio Shack.
