does taking teh harmonic ballencr out have any effect on anything? other than the grinding goin away. I have an e-bay special SSK and it rubs the harmonic ballencer occasionally, not enough for me to worry about but when i changin the diff i may want to remove it. Does anything change when you do?

You'll get a tad more noise.

Just rip that bitch off. My our 87 and my 88 don't even ahve one. I saw it oin my 88 parts car - and was like - holy crap! That thing is DUMB! It's like this huge black shroud - looks so useless, lol.

That, and I don't think rubbing it with your linkage is good on your linkage - I wouldn't want thme to rub cause that's hard on all the linkage.

I just did this to my E30 at work yesterday. There are two rods for the Z4. Which one i used exactly, I don't know, I wasn't paying attention to the P/N, but one is too long and will come down and hit the driveline, the other is a touch shorter than stock rod, this is what you want. All you need is a rod and new bushing. my cost was 35 bucks. Popped it in there, shifts are nice and short with no increased effort and I am nowhere near hitting the driveline.

It is in the shop on my lift for the weekend, but if anyone is interested I will get a part number monday you can take to any dealership and get.

the z4 2.5 is the shorter of the two in regards to the 'bottom' section of the shifter.

Yeah, the 2.5L is short below the ball which means longer throws.

z3 kit = no problems on my m3.. i've heard a lot of bad things about the z4 kit and notchiness and shit... might want to think of a differnet setup...

Ted, I'll let you run through the gears on mine on Monday. I have the Z4 3.0 lever. For everyday driving it's awesome. However, probably not the best for 'spirited' driving as downshifting into high rpm loads can be a bother sometimes.

so far these are my personal opinions on all OEM shifter kits, based on my own experiences with driving them
Z4 - don't like either of them, too short and notchy and the knob sits too low
                      MZ3 - too notchy/short also
2.8/3.0 Z3 - I love this one, drastic improvement over the MZ3 and Z4 levers
                      Z3 1.9 - good upgrade, very smooth
Z3 1.9 w/ factory dampener surrounding the lever (another part, costs more than the lever though) - smooth as hell, it's my current favorite and what I have in my new car

I've found that I can shift fastest with the 1.9L levers. And it's a much better chance of actually getting in gear when shifting, the really short ones just won't go when you try to shift quickly, or in one fluid motion.
All these apply to getrag 260 transmissions, probably totalling 6 or 7

                        Thanks for the help guys,

Does anyone have a spare Z3 1.9l shifter collecting dust?

                        Thanks

A lot of people here still seem to think that short = fast, which it doesn't (unless you have a 4lb knob).

I totally agree, I even had a heavy ass metal knob with an MZ3 lever and it was still bad
