Cut it or shave down flat spots until you can get a wrench on it. Perhaps there are flat spots already on it? Must have been some way to torque it down. Try taking off that flap without breaking it and see if you can remove it without breaking anything.

90 degrees or 1/4 turn releases the post. It was originally a double nut @ 11mm size on the narrow top post. BMW sells a tool for the larger, lower adjustment nut.
I'm also in Walnut Creek, with a hardtop on our 87. You need to see anything or want to see our top go on & off, let me know.

I pulled my hardtop off today and for the life of me I don't know what you havegoing on there. I'm thinking you can remove the speaker panels with the hardtop on then perhaps you can unbolt the body side of the pin socket and better deal with this once its off the car.
