    Speedo Connectors

I thought I would post this, as I'm having troubles finding anything on the cluster connectors online. I found some similar parts that show how the sockets and connector look when they're new.

I happen to have two sockets that have been mashed by someone. I have an intermittent speedo that comes on and off with bumps and dash pounds. Sigh. New SI board, new main board, and it is coming down to this. Anyone else had this problem?

Do you have the loose parts? I just need the pins. These pins do NOT come out nicely without the tool so I don't think just the pigtail works well for my situation.

Ya, Iyanked out the pin (destroyed it in the process) and replaced the bad pin with a wire I mashed in the socket. Speedo works great. So now I need a new pin.

Forget the sockets, you need the proper crimper for those. I have this crimper and it cost about $150.

You should be able to get by with just crimping with needle nose pliers then following with soldering it.

So what I didn't notice was a TPA lock on the side of the connector. Pulled it out and now the pins come out smoothly. So I got a connector for spare pins, replaced the pin I damaged, and tightened up the rest of the pins by gently squeezing them with some pliers. Unfortunately, my speedo still works intermittently. Guess I hadn't fixed the problem. Does anyone have an idea that would cause an intermittent speedo? I have a new SI board, a clean main board, and clean contacts.

Right. The connector at the differential, cracked solder joints on the main PCB in the cluster, cracked solder joints in the speedometer, bad cluster ground, or wiring problems are all possibilities.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Alright, I tightened up the connectors at the sensor, the ground at the speedo is good and clean. I'll test drive and if it still isn't working, then I'll reflow the joints in the speedo and check the traces on the main board.

Hmm, speedo worked straight away after the sensor contact tightening. Thanks for the pointers! We'll see how it behaves this week.

Ya that didn't last long. It's back to not working. I'll try to verify a signal at the speedo but man is this getting old. There really isn't too much that could go wrong, why is this so difficult?

Replace fuse 10, 12, and 21. Those power the cluster. Replace them.

                          Hi;
I replaced these 3 fuses yesterday as mi speedo also works intermittently. When I removed fuse 21, I got a small spark at the fuse female connector at the fuse box. I replaced with new fuse and noticed that my radio would not turn on. I looked closely at the 3 fuses I had just replaced and noticed that Fuse 12 was broken. Replaced and all OK.

Now: Not sure if related but I am noting a harder start when car is warm. I know I have a leak at my ICV - a replacement is on its way - but I didn't have that much trouble starting before yesterday.

                          Any thoughts?

My experience with intermittent speedometer operation...
Sent cluster to North Hollywood Speedometer at 6111 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood California 91606 USA with instructions that speedometer was intermittent. They replaced main board. Charged me about $125.00. I installed. No change. Speedometer still intermittent.
Complained to North Hollywood Speedometer. They said "send it back and we'll replace speedometer circuit board for another $125.00." I said, "FAT CHANCE!"
I then replaced speedometer with one from a different cluster. Now works fine.

Intermittent speedo issue is what brought me to retiring my 84 325e, I got tired of constantly pulling the cluster to check this or try that, by then I had my M42 car running.
