Sometimes the short rubber boot thingy between the front of the airbox and the opening of the plastic backing panel for the driver's side headlights can work itself loose and this allows more hot (less dense) air surrounding the engine to enter the intake. Either a clamp or some kind of adhesive can help keep these from working loose......don't know if its an issue with many, happens on my car periodically though.

Yea, I run paper filters in my street cars. We run the K&N drop-in filter in the E30 race car only because that car only runs in an RPM range between 4,500 to 6,200 RPMs. And because we happen to have an extra K&N filter. :-)

If we put in a paper filter in the race car and dyno'd, I'll bet the difference would be negligable.

And I'll add, the one thing that keeps my E30 race car from its full potential are the skills of the driver. :-)

Anybody have a picture of this? Is it actually a tube that travels from the front of the airbox to that hole in the panel behind the lights to prevent any air in the engine bay to enter the filter box? Dang, I might be missing this part.

It's a flexible rubber piece that connects the whole in the headlight covers to the hole in the airbox. My car was missing it as well.

3" filter flange (for when I had the M20 AFM).
                    K&N Cone.
                    Lukas BMW heatshield.

Sounds awesome, made stock power. Went back to stock airbox and couldn't stand the quiet, went back to the intake within a week.

Drilled box for teh winnars. I drilled mine on the underside of the airbox, I got a little techy with it meaning i actually measured out a "graph" so all the holes would line up and look even, I then took a butane lighter to the bottom of all the holes and ported (melted) them smooth!!! I also used a hose clamp to keep my rubber boot from detaching due to my stock engine mounts not beeing able to handle the sheer torque of teh m20... lol. Oh yah, FRAM filter baby...

"Having won more road races than any other model in history, the E30 M3 is considered by many to be the world's most successful road race car." - Simply put, E30s kick ass.

I replaced my airbox with this....

as has been said - no performance increase/decrease but sounds fantastic and looks pretty good too

                        :)
