haha, I did the same thing to my G20. I did feel a differene...... in cold weather, a big difference in acceleration on the highway. But when it got warmer--no difference really. But it sounded badass. But then I paid to get a new airbox from another owner when I was selling it.
Hmmm......One of my friends are parting their 325i and had their airbox lying around. (AFM too if anyone needs one, he'll sell it) But I could buy that airbox off him and cut it and still have a spare. :D

it seems to me, if you take his cutting idea and make a good custom heat sheild, you would make that whole space under and infront of the airbox, your airbox. just making a big free flowing air box, with a good heat sheild, (ie not tin foil) you should see the most gains from that.
my thinking is that it will be like cai, combined with the proven stock airfilter
but here in socal, it might get mighty dusty
